Bridging Pedagogy and Technology: The Intersection of Theory and Technical Development in M&S
As virtual learning environments continue to grow, we face a critical question: How can we ensure that simulations not only serve as technical tools but also become effective learning experiences?
At Dewey University, we’ve explored this challenge through our work in Modeling and Simulation (M&S). During our curriculum development process, it became clear that adapting content alone isn’t enough. To unlock the full potential of simulations, we must operate at the intersection between pedagogical theory and technical development. This means that frameworks like constructivism, cognitive load theory, and experiential learning must shape not only what we teach but also how simulations are designed.
Turning Simulations into Best Practices
By embedding learning theories directly into the technical development of simulations, the simulation itself becomes a best practice model. This alignment ensures that educational goals and technical design work together, resulting in simulations that foster deep engagement, promote critical thinking, and enhance adaptability in real-world scenarios.
Documentation: A Key to Sustainability
A vital insight from this process is the importance of thorough documentation of system design. Clear documentation ensures that simulations are easy to replicate, improve, and scale across different fields, from healthcare to engineering. This supports long-term growth and keeps simulations relevant over time, helping institutions and industries adopt sustainable practices.
A Model for the Future of Learning
These ideas are grounded in research and insights from events like I/ITSEC 2023, reflecting how pedagogy and technology must converge to create meaningful learning experiences. When done right, simulations evolve from tools into living models of excellence, constantly adapting to the needs of learners and advancements in technology.
What’s Next?
At Dewey University, we are committed to leading the way in bridging pedagogical theory with technical development. We believe this approach is key to creating simulations that inspire deeper learning, foster problem-solving, and promote continuous improvement. Through this work, we aim to set a new standard for STEM education that empowers students and professionals alike.
